What is merchant onboarding?
Merchant onboarding is the process of turning a prospective merchant into a reviewed, approvable and operational payment customer. It normally combines application data, company and ownership verification, website and processing review, underwriting, acquirer fit and the steps needed to activate the merchant.
Merchant onboarding starts before KYC
A merchant file usually begins with commercial qualification and application data: what the business sells, where it operates, its websites, expected processing and why it needs a payment provider. Those facts determine what evidence and review are likely to be required.
KYC and KYB establish the people and business
Identity, ownership and company evidence help establish who controls the merchant and whether the legal entity is consistent with the application. The exact evidence varies by institution, jurisdiction and risk profile.
Underwriting reviews the operating risk
The review can include website content, business model, processing exposure, chargeback history, refunds, recurring billing, delivery time, licensing and other vertical-specific risks. KYC is therefore one part of a broader merchant underwriting process.
Acquirer matching and approval come next
A complete and reviewed merchant still needs an acquiring route that fits its geography, vertical, processing profile and risk class. Approval is ultimately determined by the institution taking the merchant, not by the completeness of the application alone.
